India has been lauded as a global leader in breakthrough innovations by Bill Gates, American businessman and founder of Microsoft, during the inaugural India Independence Day celebrations at the newly-opened Indian Consulate in Seattle. Bill Gates, who is also the chairman of the Bill Gates Foundation, made these remarks while addressing a gathering of over 2,000 Indian-Americans in the Greater Seattle area on the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day.
In his speech, Bill Gates highlighted India’s significant advancements in technology, agriculture, and healthcare. He praised India’s achievements in manufacturing safe, low-cost vaccines and acknowledged the exceptional leadership demonstrated by the Indian diaspora. Bill Gates emphasized how India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) is benefiting not only Indians but also aiding countries across the Global South in developing their own DPI systems.
The event, which marked the first India Day celebration hosted by the Indian Consulate in Seattle, was attended by several notable figures including Congresswomen Suzan DelBene and Kim Schrier, Congressman Adam Smith, Lt. General Xavier Brunson, Rear Admiral Mark Sucato, Washington Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck, and Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs. The Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court, Steve Gonzalez, was also present.
The India Day celebrations featured a vibrant display of India’s cultural diversity through floats and performances representing various states and regions of India. The event received recognition through five official proclamations issued by local government bodies including King County and several cities in Oregon. Additionally, iconic buildings in Seattle and Bellevue were illuminated in the colors of the Indian flag to honor the occasion.
Bill Gates’ remarks underscored the global impact of India’s innovations and the country’s role as a key player on the world stage.
