In anticipation of the November 5 presidential election, US President Joe Biden took aim at his Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, during a campaign event in Tampa, Florida. Biden posed a direct question to voters, challenging Trump’s stance on US global leadership: “If the US stepped off the world stage, like Trump wants us to do, who would lead the world?”
Addressing attendees at the Hillsborough Community College, Biden highlighted the significance of the upcoming election on the global stage. He recounted interactions with foreign heads of state, emphasizing their concerns about the implications of the election outcome on global democracy. Biden underscored the weight of international expectations, stating, “The whole world is looking, and they’re looking to see how we handle ourselves in this election.”
In his bid for re-election, Biden is seeking to bolster support not only in states he previously won but also in those where Trump emerged victorious in 2020, including Florida, where Trump secured a 3.3 percentage point lead over Biden.
During the campaign event, Biden touted his fundraising efforts, noting that his campaign has raised “almost half a billion dollars” with contributions from 1.6 million donors, 97% of whom contributed less than $200. He emphasized the importance of grassroots support in countering what he described as a campaign “full of lies” and “misrepresentations.”
Biden also referenced national polling data, stating that he leads in 10 out of 23 polls, with Trump ahead in 8 and the candidates tied in 5. He asserted that the momentum is in his favor and highlighted the evolving attention of voters as the election approaches.
Overall, Biden’s remarks underscored the stakes of the upcoming election, both domestically and internationally, positioning himself as a candidate committed to upholding US leadership on the global stage.
