In the aftermath of India’s crushing defeat in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, the BCCI has initiated a significant shake-up in the national team’s support staff. In a clear signal of accountability, batting and fielding coaches have been removed, marking a fresh attempt to restructure the backroom team ahead of India’s next big red-ball challenge — a home Test series against England starting June 20.
Reshuffle in the Coaching Unit
Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who had joined the Indian setup just eight months ago during Gautam Gambhir’s transition into the head coach role, has been shown the door. Joining him in the exit list are fielding coach T. Dilip and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai. Even a team masseur has reportedly been released as part of the revamp. The changes come after criticism over India’s underwhelming batting performances and sloppy fielding displays in recent months, both in the home series against New Zealand and the disastrous tour of Australia.
Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach, had brought in several members from his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, including Nayar, Morne Morkel, and Ryan ten Doeschate. While Nayar’s tenure ends abruptly, others like ten Doeschate and Morkel remain part of the setup. Notably, Sitanshu Kotak, the India A and NCA coach, had also been roped in earlier this year as a batting consultant for white-ball formats due to India’s inconsistency with the bat.
Transition Ahead of England Series
Though some coaches have departed, their responsibilities are expected to be filled internally for now. Ryan ten Doeschate is likely to take over fielding duties in the absence of T. Dilip. However, no immediate replacement has been announced for Nayar, and it remains uncertain whether a new batting coach will be appointed before the upcoming series against England.
Despite the setback in Australia, India’s coaching staff did find success recently by leading the team to a Champions Trophy victory. Members like Nayar, ten Doeschate, Dilip, and Kotak played key roles in that campaign. But with a high-stakes five-match Test series looming, the BCCI is clearly aiming to reset both structure and morale in the dressing room. The coming weeks will be crucial as the Indian team regroups to tackle their next major assignment on home soil.
