Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef, widely recognized for his outspoken support of Palestine, took aim at Israel in a sharp critique following media reports suggesting that Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, was involved in planting explosives in wireless pagers. These devices, reportedly ordered by Hezbollah members, exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday, killing nine people and injuring nearly 3,000 others. The incidents have sparked outrage in Lebanon and beyond, with Hezbollah condemning the attacks as a severe security breach.
In a tweet posted shortly after the news broke, Bassem Youssef expressed his frustration, noting that the attack had gone largely unnoticed in global political and media discourse. “You win Israel. Not a single politician or late-night show talks about this? None of that worth the news?” Bassem Youssef wrote. He went on to suggest that everyday devices, such as phones and tablets, could easily be turned into “time bombs” at the whims of a powerful nation like Israel, implying the vulnerability of civilians in this conflict. His remarks underscored the ongoing tension between Israel and Hezbollah, a conflict that has periodically erupted into violence over the years.
Besides the pager explosions in Lebanon, additional blasts were reported in Syria, with nearly 100 devices exploding on the same day. Among those injured in the Lebanese attacks was Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, according to Iranian state media. The widespread damage has intensified regional tensions, with Hezbollah vowing to retaliate against Israel for what it calls the “biggest security breach” in nearly a year of war between the two sides.
Bassem Youssef, known for blending political commentary with satire, has long been critical of Israel’s actions, especially in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. At the India Today Conclave 2024 in New Delhi earlier this year, he harshly criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza, accusing the country of creating an “alternative reality” through propaganda that desensitizes people to the suffering of Palestinian civilians. Bassem Youssef’s remarks at the event reflected his deep frustration with the way the international community has responded to the conflict, which has now been ongoing for nearly two years.
Bassem Youssef also gained attention in October 2023 for his viral interview with British TV presenter Piers Morgan. During the interview, Bassem Youssef sarcastically commented on how Palestinians were perceived as difficult to kill, referencing his own marriage to a Palestinian woman in a biting response to Morgan’s question. He also remarked, with dark humor, that his wife’s family home had been bombed in Gaza, saying, “It’s very repetitive. We are used to that… It’s just like those Palestinians are very dramatic, ‘Oh Israel killing us.’ But they never die. They always come back.”
This latest critique from Bassem Youssef comes amid a heightened period of conflict and violence in the Middle East, with growing tensions between Israel, Hezbollah, and other regional actors. As Hezbollah promises retaliation, the situation remains volatile, and Bassem Youssef’s comments continue to amplify the voices critical of Israel’s actions in the region.
