In a significant development, Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid has made history by becoming the first umpire from Bangladesh to be included in the prestigious ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. This elevation comes after a distinguished career, with Sharfuddoula’s appointment being a testament to his consistent performances in international cricket.
The decision to promote Sharfuddoula was made by a selection panel chaired by ICC General Manager – Cricket, Wasim Khan. This esteemed panel also included former player and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, retired New Zealand umpire Tony Hill, and consultant officiating expert Mike Riley.
Sharfuddoula, 47, has been a part of the international umpiring scene since 2006. His journey to the elite panel saw him officiate in various prestigious tournaments, including the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Expressing his excitement and gratitude, Sharfuddoula stated, “It is a great honor to be named on the ICC Elite Panel. To be the first from my country on the panel makes it extra special and I look forward to justifying the faith shown in me.”
His inclusion in the elite panel marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh cricket and reflects the growing recognition of the country’s contributions to the global cricketing landscape.
Additionally, there were changes in the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, with Chris Broad notably not included. The panel now consists of six esteemed referees, including David Boon, Jeff Crowe, Ranjan Madugalle, Andrew Pycroft, Richie Richardson, and Javagal Srinath.
This development underscores the ongoing evolution of cricket’s officiating fraternity, with Sharfuddoula’s achievement serving as inspiration for aspiring umpires worldwide.
