  • Bangladesh plans to acquire Chinese fighter jets to strengthen air power.
  • Growing military ties between China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh raise concerns.

Amid deteriorating relations with India, Bangladesh is making significant strides to enhance its air power by turning to China for military support. In a recent statement, Bangladesh’s Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, highlighted the need to upgrade the country’s air force, focusing on the acquisition of fighter jets and attack helicopters. This move indicates Bangladesh’s intention to procure advanced fighter aircraft from China, signaling a closer military collaboration between the two nations.

According to a report by IDRW, Bangladesh is reportedly considering the purchase of the J-10C multirole fighter jets from China as part of the first phase of its air force upgrade. The country is looking to acquire 16 of these advanced fighter jets, which would mark a significant shift in Bangladesh’s defense strategy. Should this acquisition proceed, Bangladesh would follow in the footsteps of Pakistan, which has already purchased Chinese fighter aircraft in the past. In addition to the fighter jets, Bangladesh is also keen on acquiring attack helicopters, which are crucial for close air support and anti-armor operations, further enhancing its military capabilities.

The J-10C fighter jet, manufactured in China, is a fourth-generation aircraft known for its versatility and advanced features. Capable of performing both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, the J-10C is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, including an AESA radar system, and can carry a range of modern weapons. The aircraft’s robust capabilities make it an attractive option for Bangladesh, which appears intent on establishing itself as a formidable air defense power in the region.

China has previously supplied the J-10C to Pakistan, which is currently utilizing the aircraft in its military operations. Additionally, Pakistan has recently been approved to acquire China’s fifth-generation fighter jet, the J-35, which is touted to be comparable to the American F-35 fighter jet. The delivery of the J-35 is expected to begin within the next two years, further strengthening Pakistan’s air capabilities.

Bangladesh’s decision to procure Chinese fighter jets comes at a time when tensions are rising in the region, particularly between India and its neighboring countries. The growing military ties between China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have heightened concerns for India, which views these developments as a potential security threat. With Bangladesh now looking to enhance its air force capabilities, the geopolitical dynamics in South Asia are set to become even more complex.
