Bangladesh Member of Parliament Anwarul Azim Anwar was gruesomely murdered in Kolkata, with his body skinned and dismembered before being disposed of across the city, sources from the West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) have revealed.
The CID has apprehended Jihad Hawladar, a professional butcher from Barakpur in Bangladesh’s Khulna district, in connection with the murder. Hawladar, who was staying illegally in Mumbai, was allegedly brought to Kolkata two months ago by Akhtaruzzaman, the prime accused and a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, according to CID sources. Akhtaruzzaman, a close friend of the MP, allegedly paid Hawladar a share of Rs 5 crore for the killing.
Anwarul Azim Anwar was last seen entering a flat in Kolkata’s New Town area, rented out to Akhtaruzzaman by an excise department employee. The MP had arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment and initially stayed with family friend Gopal Biswas in north Kolkata. On May 13, Anwarul Azim Anwar left Biswas’s residence to visit a doctor but went missing on May 17, prompting Biswas to file a missing person’s report the following day.
Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed the MP’s murder and stated that three individuals have been arrested. The MP’s body has not yet been recovered.
Anwarul Azim Anwar, a three-time Bangladeshi MP, was in Kolkata seeking medical treatment at the time of his disappearance.
