In a tragic incident, a 14-year-old girl from Assam’s Nagaon district was gang-raped on August 22, just two days after she had asked her aunt about the meaning of rape. This shocking coincidence has left the community reeling and has intensified calls for justice.
The teenager, who dreams of becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), had asked her aunt, “Aunty, what is rape?” after reading news articles about the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Her aunt, speaking to India Today NE, recalled the conversation with deep sorrow, feeling that she had failed to protect her niece. “I never thought something so gruesome would happen here,” she said, unable to fathom the cruelty that unfolded so close to home.
The attack occurred merely one kilometer from the girl’s residence in Dhing, Nagaon, as she was cycling home from her tuition classes. Locals found her unconscious and immediately took her to a nearby hospital for medical care. The girl usually returned home with her aunt or by rickshaw, but on the day of the incident, she had decided to ride her bicycle.
The girl lives with her aunt and grandparents, as her father, who resides in Guwahati, cannot support her financially. Her aunt, who earns a modest income of Rs 10,000 per month, takes care of her education and daily needs. The father expressed his anguish over seeing his daughter in such a condition at the hospital, where she was unable to speak.
The incident has sparked widespread protests across Assam, with people demanding strict punishment for the culprits. The girl’s aunt has also considered relocating her for safety once she recovers from her injuries. In a significant turn of events, one of the accused, Tafazul Islam, allegedly died while trying to escape police custody by jumping into a pond. Authorities are actively searching for the remaining suspects involved in the case.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the incident, calling it a “crime against humanity.” In a statement on X, Sarma pledged that the state would not spare any effort to bring the perpetrators to justice, saying, “We will NOT SPARE anyone & BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE.”
As the investigation progresses, the tragic case of this young girl has not only shattered the peace of a small town but has also highlighted the urgent need for societal and legal measures to protect children from such heinous crimes.
