Seoul [South Korea], October 25 (ANI): The Indian shooting duo of Sarabjot Singh and Surbhi Rao secured a silver medal at the ongoing Asian Shooting Championships in the 10 m air pistol mixed team event in South Korea on Wednesday.
As per Olympics.com, it is India’s second medal in senior competition at the championships after Sarabjot’s bronze in men’s 10 m air pistol medal on Tuesday.
The Indian pair faced a 16-4 loss to Chinese pair of Jinyao Liu and Xue Li in the title clash and had to settle for a silver medal.
Sarabjot and Surbhi finished at third in qualifying round with Sarabjot (293-10x) and Surbhi (288-10x) having a combined total of 581-20x while Jinyao Liu and Xue Li finished on top with 581-22x. China’s Ranxin Jiang and Bowen Zhang were at second spot after scoring 581-21x.
The two top teams from qualifying teams make the cut for gold medal matches.
South Korea beat Pakistan 17-13 in first bronze medal game while Vietnam beat Iran 16-14 to secure the second bronze medal.
The Asian Shooting Championships in 2023 serve as a qualifying event for the Olympics in Paris in 2024. There are 24 Olympic quotas available, and the top two finishers in each of the 12 Olympic shooting competitions (one from each nation) will earn a berth on their national teams.
The Indian shooters were unsuccessful in both the men’s and women’s skeet finals on Wednesday.
After placing fourth in the final on Wednesday, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, who took home the silver medal from the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, was denied both a medal and an Olympic quota.
In the six-man final, the Indian shooter was eliminated after making 33 of 40 shots. After scoring 53/60, Qatar’s Rashid Saleh Al-Athba went on to win the gold medal, followed by Minshu Kim of South Korea, who shot 51/60. Meng Yuan Lee of China Taipei took up the bronze medal with a 42/50 score.
Gurjoat reached the men’s skeet final but was first to get eliminated after missing five of the first 20 shots. He finished third in the qualifying round after shooting 121 from five rounds.
Anantjeet Singh Naruka finished seventh in the qualifying round with a score of 119 but qualified for the six-man final as South Korea’s Jongjun Lee, who finished fourth, competed for ranking points only (RPO). Angad Vir Singh Bajwa finished ninth with 118 while Vikram Karn Singh competed for RPO and scored 107 points to earn 40th place finish.
Ganemat Sekhon emerged as best-placed Indian in the women’s skeet at 15th, with a score 108. She was followed by Kartiki Singh and Parinaaz Dhaliwal, finishing on 17th and 18th, respectively. Darshna Rathore was 19th after shooting 106 in the field consisting of 28 shooters. (ANI)
