Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw has called on filmmakers to embrace emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, 5G, and virtual production to enhance their craft and keep pace with global trends. Writing in an editorial ahead of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), set to take place in Goa from November 20 to 28, the minister emphasized the transformative role of technology in the creative economy and its potential to redefine content creation in India.
Highlighting India’s journey from a nation of storytellers to nation-builders, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored the growing significance of the creative industry, which he pegged at $30 billion. He detailed the government’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation and support content creators, including the upcoming World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit scheduled for February next year. These initiatives, he noted, aim to position India as a global hub for creative talent and technological advancement in the entertainment sector.
The 55th IFFI promises to be a grand celebration of cinematic excellence, with 180 international films from 81 countries set to be screened during the festival. A special segment will spotlight Goan films, showcasing 14 locally produced movies to celebrate the region’s vibrant cultural and artistic heritage. This initiative highlights the festival’s commitment to promoting local talent alongside global cinematic achievements.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the IFFI parade on November 22 will feature a unique ‘Sky Lantern’ competition, inviting participants to display their creativity and compete for cash rewards. The parade, beginning at the ESG office venue and culminating at Kala Academy, aims to engage the local community while enhancing the festival’s visual appeal.
The editorial by Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw also stressed the role of technology as a game-changer for young filmmakers. With tools like AI and virtual production becoming increasingly accessible, these technologies can empower creators to produce innovative, high-quality content efficiently. The minister’s message aligns with the festival’s broader theme of innovation, underscoring the importance of integrating cutting-edge advancements into storytelling practices.
As IFFI 2024 opens its doors, it not only celebrates the art of filmmaking but also encourages a forward-looking approach that blends creativity with technology. With its diverse lineup and initiatives, the festival reaffirms India’s position as a global leader in cinema and a hub for innovation in the creative economy.
