Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes, was administered insulin in Tihar Jail after his blood sugar level surged to 320, sources within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) revealed. This treatment followed Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy.
According to AAP sources, this marked the first instance of insulin administration to Kejriwal since his imprisonment. The Chief Minister, known for his high blood sugar levels, had previously been taking 50 units of insulin daily.
Confirming the development, a source within Tihar Jail disclosed that two units of insulin were administered to Kejriwal on Monday evening, following advice from a doctor at AIIMS. The decision was made after assessing Kejriwal’s glucose meter readings, which showed a dangerously high range between 250 and 320.
Kejriwal had earlier contested the prison administration’s statements regarding his health, alleging falsehoods due to “political pressure.” He had written to the Tihar Superintendent requesting insulin, citing his critical glucose levels.
Moreover, Kejriwal’s consultation with AIIMS doctors on April 20 reassured him of no serious health concerns, advising him to continue his prescribed medications. However, the issue of insulin was neither raised by Kejriwal nor suggested by the doctors during the consultation.
The AAP has accused the Tihar Jail administration of endangering Kejriwal’s life by withholding insulin, further exacerbated by allegations from the Enforcement Directorate regarding his diet in jail. Kejriwal’s lawyer countered these claims, stating that his consumption of mangoes and aloo puri was minimal and in line with religious observances.
In a gesture of support, Kejriwal met his wife, Sunita, at the prison premises on Monday, as disclosed by sources within Tihar Jail.
