A recent breakthrough in the study of Peru’s mysterious Nazca Lines has been made with the discovery of 303 new geoglyphs, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). The Nazca Lines, a collection of ancient designs etched into the desert floor, have long puzzled scientists. The new findings add to the intrigue surrounding the enigmatic figures, which date back nearly 2,000 years. Among the new geoglyphs, researchers have identified a range of shapes, including killer whales, cats, camels, and even abstract figures, such as a knife-wielding orca. One geoglyph even resembles the popular Pixar robot character, Wall-E.

The discovery was the result of a joint effort by scientists at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Centre in New York and Yamagata University in Japan. Using AI, the researchers trained a model on existing geoglyph images and deployed it to scan the Nazca Desert for previously unidentified patterns. The AI detected the new geoglyphs, which were later confirmed through site visits by human experts. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Nazca Lines have long been a source of fascination for archaeologists. Created between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500 by the pre-Incan Nazca civilisation, the geoglyphs are found in a 170-square-mile area of Peru’s Nazca Desert. These figures, etched by removing the desert’s red-tinged surface pebbles to expose lighter soil beneath, have intrigued researchers since their rediscovery in the 1920s. Prior to the latest discovery, around 430 geoglyphs had been identified, many of which were located in the last two decades through advancements in satellite imagery.

The new geoglyphs include depictions of both humans and domesticated animals, though some figures remain abstract, further deepening the mystery surrounding their purpose. While the exact significance of the Nazca Lines remains unknown, experts believe the figures may have held ceremonial or astronomical purposes for the Nazca people. The newly discovered geoglyphs offer additional insight into the artistic capabilities and ingenuity of this ancient civilisation.

The use of AI in uncovering these geoglyphs marks a significant advancement in archaeological research. According to the team, many of the lines in the newly found figures were faint, but AI was able to detect patterns that had previously gone unnoticed. The researchers plan to continue using AI to search for more hidden geoglyphs in the region, potentially shedding more light on the cultural and historical significance of the Nazca Lines.

This discovery has reinvigorated interest in the Nazca Lines, prompting renewed efforts to better understand the ancient civilisation responsible for these remarkable works of art.
