Indian wrestling standout Antim Panghal has opted to forego participation in the upcoming Asian Wrestling Championships 2024, slated to commence in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on April 11.
Having secured a coveted wrestling quota for India in the women’s 53kg category for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by clinching a bronze medal at the World Championships last year, Antim Panghal, aged 19, has made the strategic decision to concentrate exclusively on her preparations for the forthcoming Summer Games, which are less than four months away.
Antim Panghal showcased an exceptional performance throughout the 2023 season, successfully defending her under-20 world title and adding a bronze medal to her accolades at the Hangzhou Asian Games in October. Despite her notable achievements, Panghal has refrained from competitive appearances following the Asian Games. Moreover, she was excused from participating in India’s selection trials for both the Asian Wrestling Championships and the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament held last month.
In lieu of Antim Panghal, Anju, aged 25, will step in to represent India in the women’s 53kg category at the Asian Championships. Anju, a promising talent, previously secured a bronze medal at the 2021 U23 World Championships. Notably, at the recent trials, she emerged victorious over two-time World Championships medalist Vinesh Phogat in the semi-finals.
While Vinesh Phogat clinched victory in the trials for the 50 kg weight division, she is anticipated to compete in the same category at the Asian Championships. It is worth noting that Phogat achieved significant milestones, including gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, in the 50kg weight class.
Having represented India in the 53kg weight category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics following her participation in the 48kg freestyle division at the Rio 2016 Olympics, Vinesh Phogat continues to be a prominent figure in the realm of Indian wrestling.
The Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 is scheduled to draw to a close on April 16, followed by the Asian Qualifying Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics, also to be held in Bishkek, from April 19 to 21.
