Amit Shah’s Remarks Spark Controversy Amid BJP’s Dalit Outreach Efforts
New Delhi, January 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during a parliamentary debate have ignited a political storm, further complicating the BJP’s relationship with India’s Dalit community. Shah’s statement, perceived as insensitive, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders and Dalit groups, raising questions about the BJP’s ability to bridge the gap with the 16.6% Dalit population of the country.
The Controversial Remarks
On December 17, 2024, Shah remarked in the Rajya Sabha, “Nowadays, it has become a fashion—Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If one had chanted God’s name this much, they would have secured heaven for seven lifetimes.”
Opposition leaders seized on the statement, calling it an insult to Ambedkar’s legacy. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge described it as “hurtful to Dalit sentiments,” while Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of promoting “Manusmriti ideologies.” BSP chief Mayawati also criticized the BJP, calling the statement a reflection of its insensitivity towards Dalits.
BJP’s Dalit Disconnect
Historically, the BJP has struggled to gain the trust of Dalit voters. While the party secured 33% of Dalit votes in the 2019 elections, incidents like the 2016 Rohith Vemula case and the 2020 Hathras gangrape have widened the rift.
According to the 2023 NCRB report, crimes against Dalits rose by 17%, with over 50,900 cases reported nationwide. Additionally, socio-economic challenges persist, with over 72% of Dalits living below the poverty line.
Outreach Efforts Fall Short
Despite initiatives like Stand-Up India and PM Awas Yojana, the BJP’s welfare programs have failed to translate into substantial grassroots support. Symbolic gestures, such as the declaration of Ambedkar’s sites as “Panchteerth,” have not effectively addressed systemic issues like discrimination and exclusion.
Electoral Implications
With state elections in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar approaching, Dalit votes remain a critical factor. Opposition parties, including the BSP and RJD, are expected to capitalize on Shah’s remarks, framing them as indicative of the BJP’s alleged anti-Dalit agenda.
While the BJP has dismissed the controversy as a misinterpretation, its ability to recover Dalit trust in time for the 2025 elections remains uncertain.
