Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the revamped Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Golaghat district, Assam. This marks a significant step in upgrading the police training infrastructure in the region. The ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and senior state officials.
During the event, Shah laid the foundation stone for the second phase of the academy’s renovation, which aims to further enhance the facilities. After the inauguration, Shah was given a detailed tour of the academy by Assam’s Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, who highlighted the advanced training amenities offered at the facility. The Home Minister also interacted with senior officials and took photographs with them.
The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, spread across 340 acres, is being modernized at a cost of ₹1,024 crore in two phases. The first phase of the project, which has already been completed at an investment of ₹167.4 crore, includes the construction of a five-story building. This building houses several modern amenities such as smart classrooms, a weapon training simulator, research laboratories, administrative offices, and a museum. Additionally, a modern parade ground has also been constructed as part of the first phase.
The state-of-the-art weapon training simulator will play a crucial role in preparing law enforcement personnel for real-world combat situations. It provides a safe, cost-effective environment for training, allowing trainees to hone their skills without exposure to risks or hazards. The simulator is designed to cater to various firearms, assisting in the basic training, skills development, and testing of recruits, particularly for special courses and commando training.
The academy’s smart classrooms feature interactive digital boards and personal computers, ensuring an advanced and engaging learning environment. Other facilities at the academy include a library, computer labs, and seminar rooms to aid in comprehensive learning.
The second phase of development, estimated at ₹425.48 crore, will focus on housing infrastructure. This will include residential quarters for 240 families, hostels for 312 officers and personnel, and accommodations for up to 2,640 trainees, significantly boosting the academy’s capacity.
This ambitious project underscores the government’s commitment to improving law enforcement training in the region, aiming to better equip the police force for future challenges.
