In a recent address at the ET NOW Global Summit 2024, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the government’s resolve to enact the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Shah underscored the significance of the CAA, emphasizing its purpose to provide citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
The Home Minister confronted allegations of the CAA being a tool to strip individuals of their citizenship, clarifying that the act was designed solely to offer refuge to minorities facing persecution in specific nations. Shah dismissed concerns regarding the act’s impact on Indian Muslims, stressing that it does not entail any provision for revoking citizenship.
Furthermore, Shah criticized the opposition, particularly the Congress party, for reneging on their commitment to implement the CAA. He recalled Congress’s historical stance of welcoming refugees during the partition era, accusing them of abandoning their principles.
The Citizenship Amendment Act
The CAA, introduced by the Modi government in 2019, aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians who migrated to India before December 31, 2014.
On 2024 Lok Sabha Polls
Turning to electoral predictions, Shah expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s success in the upcoming polls. He boldly forecasted a landslide victory, envisioning the BJP securing 370 seats while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) surpasses the 400 mark. Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier during the budget session in the Parliament exudes confidence over BJP’s mammoth victory in the upcoming polls.
“Now even the opposition parties are confident that this time too they will have to sit in the opposition,” Shah asserted.
