Significance of Amarnath Yatra

Hindu scriptures mention that it was in this sacred cave that Lord Shiva narrated the Amar Katha (the story of immortality) to Mata Parvati. According to religious beliefs, any devotee who sincerely visits Amarnath and witnesses the darshan of Baba Barfani will have all their sins washed away and will eventually attain moksha (liberation). Additionally, it is said that the pilgrimage to this holy site grants the same spiritual merit as visiting 23 other sacred shrines. The self-manifested Shivling in Amarnath fluctuates in size according to the phases of the moon.

The Amarnath yatra traditionally begins on Ashadha Purnima (the full moon day in the month of Ashadha) and continues through Sawan. The yatra concludes on Shravan Purnima, which coincides with Raksha Bandhan. It is believed that Lord Shiva first visited this cave on Shravan Purnima, making this day especially significant for the darshan of the cave. On this day, a special ritual is performed where the Chhadi Mubarak (a ceremonial staff) is placed next to the Shivling inside the cave.

What is “Chhadi Mubarak”?

“Chhadi Mubarak” is an important religious tradition associated with the Amarnath Yatra. During this ritual, a sacred staff or gada, believed to be related to Lord Shiva, is carried to the Amarnath Cave. This staff symbolizes the conclusion of the pilgrimage and marks the end of the yatra. This tradition holds great significance and is considered a key part of the religious practice.
