Flash floods have caused widespread devastation in northern Afghanistan, resulting in a tragic loss of life and significant damage to homes. According to the United Nations, the floods have claimed the lives of over 200 people in Baghlan province alone.
The flooding, triggered by heavy rainfall on Friday, has led to the destruction or damage of thousands of houses. In Baghlani Jadid district, up to 1,500 homes were affected, with over 100 reported fatalities, as per information from the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.
Taliban government officials have also reported casualties, with 62 deaths confirmed as of Friday night. Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid expressed condolences for the victims, noting that “hundreds of our fellow citizens have succumbed to these calamitous floods.”
Additionally, flash flooding has been reported in multiple provinces, including Takhar, where 20 deaths were recorded. Rainfall-induced damage has also been observed in northeastern Badakhshan, central Ghor, and western Herat provinces.
Emergency response teams have been mobilized to provide assistance in the affected areas, focusing on rescuing injured and stranded individuals. The defense ministry has affirmed their commitment to supporting relief efforts.
Afghanistan, already grappling with the challenges of conflict and poverty, faces heightened vulnerability to climate-related disasters. The nation’s limited infrastructure and resources further exacerbate the impact of natural calamities like floods.
As the nation mourns the lives lost and grapples with the aftermath of the floods, international assistance and support are crucial in providing relief and aiding recovery efforts.
