India’s campaign at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup concluded in a disheartening manner, as they faced a 1-0 defeat against Syria in Doha’s Al Bayt Stadium. The team’s performance across three games, spanning over 270 minutes, resulted in six goals conceded, none scored, and zero points earned. This underwhelming result echoed the men’s team’s experience at the Asian Games, where despite a commendable effort, the team lacked the crucial final ball and end product, highlighting a recurring issue in their approach at the continental level.
Struggles on the Continental Stage
India’s journey in the tournament was challenging, facing off against higher-ranked teams like Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria. Coach Igor Stimac’s side battled valiantly, displaying moments of potential, yet struggled with physical disparities and a lack of tactical execution. India managed only five shots on target throughout the tournament and succeeded in maintaining possession predominantly against Uzbekistan, who had already secured a substantial lead. The lack of quality in the attacking phase was stark, especially compared to India’s performances in three home tournaments against teams like Kuwait and Lebanon.
Stimac’s Reflection and Future Prospects

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Coach Stimac remarked, “It was a good learning experience for us. In three games, we could see we can compete at this level. This was a good lesson, and we can say in the next edition of the Asian Cup, we will be much stronger.” He attributed the team’s inability to finish chances to their lack of club-level experience. Stimac’s assertion of creating opportunities, however, seems optimistic, considering the team’s solitary significant chance was a half-volley from Rahul KP against Uzbekistan.
Stimac also critiqued individual performances, saying, “We had a clear plan to take the game to 60 minutes and then bring in fresh legs, but that didn’t happen. Only Udanta (Singh) tried to make it. My simple philosophy is to give chances to players whose progress I see in training every single day. That’s why Udanta got his chance.”
Looking ahead, India prepares for the World Cup qualifiers, where they are well-positioned in a group with Qatar and Kuwait. Stimac is hopeful about making history by possibly advancing to the third round of the World Cup Qualifiers for the first time.
