  • The Bombay High Court dismissed the defamation case after the settlement between both parties.
  • Santosh Kumar issued an unconditional apology after accusing Aditya Dhar of script theft.
A major controversy surrounding filmmaker Aditya Dhar and the alleged script theft claims connected to Dhurandhar 2 has officially come to an end after writer Santosh Kumar issued an unconditional apology before the Bombay High Court.

The dispute, which had generated intense discussion across the entertainment industry and social media platforms over the past few months, centered on accusations made by Santosh Kumar that Dhar had allegedly stolen his script idea for the political action drama sequel. However, following legal proceedings and court intervention, the matter has now been resolved amicably.

The development marks a significant turning point in a case that had sparked debates around intellectual property rights, screenplay ownership, and the growing tensions between independent writers and established filmmakers in the Indian film industry.

Controversy Began With Public Allegations Against Aditya Dhar

The issue first erupted earlier this year when Santosh Kumar publicly accused Aditya Dhar of using his original screenplay without permission while developing Dhurandhar 2.

During a press conference held on March 30, Santosh Kumar openly referred to Dhar as a “thief” and claimed the filmmaker had adapted his registered script into the film without giving him credit or compensation.

The allegations quickly gained attention online because of Dhar’s reputation as one of Bollywood’s prominent directors known for politically charged and high-impact storytelling.

Santosh Kumar claimed he had originally written the script in 2023 and had approached several major production houses and filmmakers in an attempt to develop the project. According to him, the screenplay had been shared with multiple companies, including leading studios and entertainment banners.

He alleged that after watching Dhurandhar 2, he realized the film’s narrative closely resembled his own story and screenplay concepts.

The writer further claimed he possessed supporting material, including script drafts, sketches, registration documents, and related proof that allegedly established his ownership of the original work.

His statements triggered significant debate within the film industry, especially regarding screenplay protection and the challenges faced by emerging writers while pitching stories to major studios.

Aditya Dhar Responds With Defamation Action

Following the public allegations, Aditya Dhar moved swiftly to protect his reputation by filing a defamation complaint before the Bombay High Court.

According to legal representatives appearing on Dhar’s behalf, the filmmaker strongly objected to the accusations and described the statements made by Santosh Kumar as defamatory and damaging.

Senior Advocate Dr. Birendra Saraf, representing Dhar, informed the court that the filmmaker was willing to resolve the matter provided Santosh Kumar agreed not to repeat such allegations publicly in the future.

The legal move shifted the controversy from public debate to formal judicial proceedings.

Industry observers noted that the case highlighted how defamation disputes connected to creative ownership can rapidly escalate within the entertainment business, especially in the age of digital media where allegations spread quickly online.

The controversy also renewed conversations about the importance of legal documentation, screenplay registration, and confidentiality while sharing scripts with production companies.

Santosh Kumar Offers Unconditional Apology

During the latest court hearing, Santosh Kumar’s legal counsel formally offered an unconditional apology on behalf of the writer.

The lawyer assured the court that no further defamatory remarks or accusations would be made against Aditya Dhar in the future.

After receiving the apology, Dhar reportedly decided not to pursue further claims related to defamation damages or legal penalties.

The Bombay High Court subsequently accepted the apology and dismissed the matter, effectively bringing the dispute to a close.

Legal experts pointed out that such settlements are relatively common in defamation matters where parties agree to resolve disputes without prolonged litigation.

The resolution also helped prevent a potentially lengthy courtroom battle that could have further intensified media attention surrounding the controversy.

Earlier Claims Sparked Industry-Wide Debate

Before the apology, Santosh Kumar had made several strong claims during his media interactions.

He had alleged that he originally envisioned actor Aditya Roy Kapur for the lead role and had approached various filmmakers and companies in an effort to produce the script.

According to his earlier statements, he had shared the screenplay with multiple entertainment banners, including some of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry.

Santosh Kumar also claimed that his screenplay was registered with the Screenwriters Association in November 2023 and asserted that he possessed substantial proof supporting his allegations.

The writer further argued that while the final film may have been commercially successful, it allegedly transformed his intended cinematic story into what he described as “political propaganda.”

These remarks drew mixed reactions across social media and among industry professionals.

While some independent creators sympathized with concerns about script protection and idea theft in the entertainment industry, others cautioned against making public accusations without definitive legal evidence.

Bollywood Continues Facing Script Ownership Challenges

The controversy surrounding Dhurandhar 2 once again highlighted the larger issue of screenplay ownership disputes in Bollywood.

Over the years, several filmmakers, writers, and producers have faced allegations involving similarities between scripts, concepts, and character arcs.

Because ideas are frequently pitched to multiple production houses during development stages, disputes over originality and ownership occasionally emerge within the industry.

Legal experts often advise writers to maintain detailed documentation, secure formal registrations, and establish written agreements before sharing creative material.

At the same time, filmmakers and studios increasingly rely on legal protections and contractual safeguards to prevent future intellectual property conflicts.

The rapid growth of digital platforms, streaming services, and large-scale content production has intensified competition for original stories, making screenplay disputes more visible than ever before.

Aditya Dhar Maintains Industry Standing

Despite the controversy, Aditya Dhar’s professional standing within the industry appears unaffected following the court settlement.

Known for directing successful projects with strong political and action-oriented themes, Dhar has built a reputation for large-scale storytelling and commercially successful cinema.

The filmmaker chose not to prolong the dispute after receiving the apology, a move that many industry insiders viewed as an effort to close the controversy without further escalation.

With the legal proceedings now concluded, attention is expected to shift back toward Dhar’s future film projects and ongoing productions.

For Santosh Kumar, the apology marks the end of a difficult public legal battle that had drawn nationwide media attention.

The case ultimately serves as another reminder of the growing importance of legal clarity, professional conduct, and careful handling of creative disputes in India’s rapidly evolving entertainment industry.
