A fresh controversy has erupted around Tamil actor and politician Vijay Thalapathy after a fatwa was issued against him by a Muslim cleric for allegedly inviting anti-social elements to an iftar party. The incident has stirred political and communal sentiments as the actor transitions into his new role as the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a political outfit he launched earlier this year.
Fatwa issued by Muslim cleric in Bareilly
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, announced the fatwa against Vijay Thalapathy during a media briefing in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He accused the actor of previously portraying Muslims as terrorists in his films and now attempting to gain political mileage by engaging with the Muslim community through religious gatherings.
“Vijay Thalapathy, a popular Tamil film actor who now leads the TVK political party, is trying to enter politics by appealing to the Muslim community. But during his time in cinema, he defamed Muslims by showing them as terrorists and criminals in multiple films,” Razvi stated.
He further alleged that Vijay’s recent iftar party included people with questionable backgrounds, including alcoholics, gamblers, and other anti-social individuals. This, he claimed, has deeply offended the sentiments of the Muslim community, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Displaying a printed copy of the fatwa, the cleric urged Muslims to refrain from interacting with the actor or supporting his political journey.
Cleric advises Muslims to distance from Vijay Thalapathy
Maulana Razvi took a stern stand, asking Tamil Nadu’s Muslim population not to trust Vijay Thalapathy . “I request the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu to avoid meeting, shaking hands with, or placing their trust in actor Vijay Thalapathy . They should stay cautious and make wise decisions regarding who they support,” he said.
The fatwa has intensified debate in political and social circles, especially as Vijay Thalapathy prepares to enter full-time politics. The iftar party, which was likely intended as a gesture of goodwill, has now taken on serious political implications. Neither Vijay Thalapathy nor his party TVK has officially responded to the allegations or the cleric’s comments at the time of reporting.
The development comes at a sensitive time in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with several new entrants vying for space ahead of the upcoming elections. Vijay’s move from film to politics has been under close scrutiny, and this controversy adds another layer of complexity to his budding political career.
