An Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flight, en route from Madrid, Spain to Montevideo, Uruguay, was rocked by intense turbulence, resulting in an emergency landing in Brazil and injuring 30 people on board.

The mid-air incident unfolded dramatically, causing passengers to be violently thrown from their seats. Shockingly, one man was reportedly propelled into an overhead bin, where he became lodged amidst the chaos.

Flight UX045 diverted to Natal airport in northeast Brazil following the turbulence, which inflicted significant damage throughout the aircraft. Disturbing videos shared by passengers depicted scenes of havoc, including torn ceiling panels, a damaged seat, and oxygen masks dangling precariously.

Air Europa assured that despite the severity of the turbulence, the emergency landing was executed safely. “The plane has landed normally and the injuries of varying degrees that were recorded are already being treated,” the airline stated.

Describing the harrowing experience, passenger Norys recounted the abrupt onset of the turbulence after a warning from the captain. “From one moment to the next the plane abruptly fell and we all went up. Those who did not have seatbelts flew and some remained hooked to the roof,” Norys shared with Uruguayan outlet El Observador.

Uruguay’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the injured were receiving medical attention at Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital in Natal, with arrangements made for their return to Montevideo.

In response to the incident, Air Europa announced plans for a replacement flight from Madrid to retrieve passengers who opted against an alternative bus journey back to Uruguay.

Passenger Juan likened the turbulent episode to a “horror movie,” recounting the sheer terror and sensation of freefall. “The sensation was one of terror, the feeling that you are falling and that it does not end. And you are aware that you are falling at an incalculable speed. And you felt that it ended there, that you died,” Juan expressed to El Observador.

The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of air travel and the swift response required to manage emergencies in flight, emphasizing the critical role of safety protocols amid such turbulent conditions.
