At least 25 people have lost their lives, and over 60 others have been hospitalized after consuming toxic liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, officials reported on Thursday.
Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth visited those receiving treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in the district.
Expressing shock over the tragic incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin took swift action against responsible officials and perpetrators.
“I was shocked and saddened to hear about the deaths caused by the consumption of adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in this crime have been arrested, and action has been initiated against officials who failed to prevent it,” Stalin stated in a social media post.
He emphasized a proactive approach from the public in reporting such crimes and vowed stringent measures against those undermining societal well-being.
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi extended condolences to the affected families and wished a speedy recovery to the hospitalized victims.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of many lives in Kallakurichi due to the consumption of counterfeit liquor. Several others remain critically ill. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the swift recovery of the hospitalized,” a statement from Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan conveyed.
The Governor expressed concern over recurring incidents of deaths linked to illicit liquor consumption across various parts of the state.
“Reports of deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor from different regions of our state continue to surface. These incidents highlight ongoing challenges in controlling the production and consumption of illegal alcohol, which is a matter of grave concern,” the statement added.
