Fish are beautiful creatures in nature. There are around 34,000 fish species in oceans and rivers worldwide. In this article, we’ll look at 10 stunning fish, talking about how they look and interesting facts about them.

1. Red Crowntail Betta fish

The Crowntail betta fish is a striking species known for its vibrant tail fin. This freshwater fish hails from South Asia and is relatively young, around 20 years in existence. Its unique feature is its caudal fin, which can extend up to eight inches, three times the size of its body. Typically, it grows to about 2.5 inches but can reach a maximum size of three inches. These fish usually live for two to three years, common for small tropical freshwater fish.

2. Discus fish

Symphysodon, known as discus fish, hails from the Amazon river basin in South America. These fish, part of the Cichlidae family, are cherished in freshwater aquariums for their distinctive appearance, vibrant colors, and tranquil demeanor, earning them the nickname “King of the Aquarium.” They are a significant aquaculture industry in parts of Asia. Although generally peaceful, discus can display aggression during spawning and mating rituals due to their cichlid nature.

3. Banggai Cardinal fish

The Banggai cardinalfish is a small fish found only in the Banggai Archipelago, Indonesia. It’s often kept in aquariums due to its popularity. This fish is silver with small dots on its fins and three vertical black stripes. It’s important to note that it has been taken out of its natural home and introduced to other places through the ornamental live reef trade.

4. Mandarin Fish

The Mandarinfish, found in the Pacific Ocean, is admired for its exquisite appearance. This small, timid tropical fish is a favorite among photographers because of its stunning beauty and unique behaviors. However, it’s not a proficient hunter, being a selective and slow eater. Its diet mainly comprises tiny creatures like protozoans, small worms, and small crustaceans such as mysids, amphipods, and isopods. Despite its delicate nature, the Mandarinfish remains a captivating ocean dweller.

5. Freshwater Angelfish

The freshwater angelfish, well-known in the aquarium world, originates from tropical South America, especially the Amazon River region. These fish thrive in calm, sluggish waters and prefer dimly lit spots, often near submerged vegetation or fallen trees. Belonging to the Cichlid family, they display a range of attractive colors and patterns, including stripes, solid silver, and black and silver marble. With a lifespan of up to 10 years or more, they make captivating and enduring aquatic pets.

6. Ram Cichlid

The Ram cichlid is a popular, small, and colorful aquarium fish found in the Orinoco River basin in Columbia and Venezuela. It has an oval body with pointed fins and tails. Male Rams can grow larger than females, about 2 inches longer in tanks and up to 2 3/4 inches in the wild. They also have more pointed dorsal fins when mature.

7. Sismese Fighting Fishes

Siamese fighting fish, popular in aquariums, face vulnerability. They hail from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, mainly in Thailand’s Chao Phraya river, thriving in floodplains, rice paddies, and canals. Known for vibrant colors and elegant fins, they come in shades like blue, red, orange, yellow, black, and green.

8. Lionfish

The lionfish is famous for its beauty, with colorful stripes and spiky fins. It can be dangerous to humans, causing pain, fever, vomiting, and more if stung. Severe cases may lead to limb paralysis or even death, mainly affecting children, the elderly, or those with weak immune systems. Lionfish are found in the Indo-Pacific, often near reefs, lagoons, and rocky areas up to 50 meters deep.

9. Clownfish

Clownfish, or anemonefish, famous from Disney’s Finding Nemo, are admired for their vibrant orange and white stripes, making them stunning marine creatures.

These fish reside in the Indian Ocean’s warm waters, making their homes among sea anemones. They tend to be timid creatures and seek refuge inside the sea anemones when they sense a predator nearby.

10. French Angelfish

The French angelfish is a type of fish. They live in the western Atlantic Ocean, from New York to Brazil, and also in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern Atlantic. They can be found at depths ranging from 6.7 to 328 feet underwater. These fish have black bodies with yellow patterns. When they are young, they have black bodies with vertical yellow stripes.
