The decision to grant National Council of Educational Research and Training deemed university status under a distinct category is being viewed as a landmark development in India’s education system. The move is expected to strengthen research, teacher education, curriculum development, and academic innovation under the framework of the National Education Policy 2020.
For decades, education experts and academic communities had advocated for greater institutional autonomy for NCERT, considering its crucial role in shaping school education across the country. With this recognition, the institution is now expected to expand its academic and research capabilities at both national and international levels.
Institution That Shaped India’s School Education
Established nearly seven decades ago, NCERT has played a central role in developing India’s school education system. From curriculum frameworks and teacher training to digital learning and educational research, the institution has remained one of the country’s most influential academic bodies.
Its Regional Institutes of Education located in Mysuru, Bhopal, Ajmer, Bhubaneswar, Shillong, and Nellore have consistently produced highly trained teachers through integrated B.Ed and M.Ed programs. These institutes have introduced interdisciplinary teacher education models covering science, social science, commerce, agriculture, language studies, and technical education.
Students selected from across India receive training in these institutes and later contribute significantly in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya schools, universities, educational administration, and research institutions.
Major Boost for Academic Research and Innovation
Although NCERT faculty members have long been recruited under University Grants Commission standards, the institution lacked university status, limiting its ability to independently supervise doctoral research and advanced academic programs.
Education experts believe this resulted in a significant loss of academic and research potential over the years. Hundreds of experienced professors and researchers working within NCERT could not fully utilize their expertise in guiding advanced research programs.
With deemed university recognition, NCERT is now expected to play a larger role in doctoral research, advanced teacher education, curriculum innovation, and global academic collaboration. Experts believe this will significantly strengthen India’s educational research ecosystem.
National Education Policy Expands NCERT’s Role
Under the National Education Policy 2020, India is moving toward a seamless education system that connects foundational learning with advanced research and multidisciplinary education. In this evolving structure, NCERT’s responsibilities are expected to become even more significant.
The institution already contributes extensively in digital education, inclusive learning, online teaching platforms, educational psychology, teacher training, and educational technology integration. University-level autonomy is likely to provide stronger institutional support for these initiatives.
Experts also believe the decision will help bridge the gap between school education and higher education by integrating research-oriented approaches into teaching methodologies at the school level.
Longstanding Demand of Students and Faculty Addressed
Students and faculty associated with NCERT had long expressed concern that despite studying in a nationally reputed institution, degrees were issued through affiliated state universities rather than directly by NCERT itself.
The new status is expected to change that structure and provide greater institutional identity to students graduating from NCERT institutions. Education professionals have described the move as a major academic reform that could elevate India’s teacher education system globally.
Several former education administrators and scholars have called the decision a milestone for the future of Indian education. They believe it will promote innovation, strengthen research culture, and improve the overall quality of education in the coming decades.
