East Delhi, Geeta Colony | Special Correspondent
A unique blend of cultural tradition and social awareness was witnessed in East Delhi’s Geeta Colony, where a community programme under Mission Shakti highlighted the importance of maternal health. The event featured a traditional God Bharai (baby shower) ceremony alongside a focused awareness drive, setting a strong example of how cultural practices can be effectively used to promote public health messages.

Leadership Driving Social Awareness

The programme, organized by the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD), saw active leadership from Dr Rashmi Singh, who attended as the chief guest. Under her guidance, the initiative successfully delivered a strong message about prioritizing maternal health and well-being.

District Officer (East) Sadhana Singh was also present, adding to the significance of the event. Officials including Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs), supervisors, nutrition staff, Mission Shakti team members, anganwadi workers, and helpers participated actively. A large number of beneficiaries also attended, reflecting strong community engagement.

Tradition Meets Public Health Messaging

The highlight of the programme was the traditional God Bharai ceremony, conducted with respect and celebration for pregnant women. The ceremony served not only as a cultural event but also as a platform to recognize and support expectant mothers.

Beneficiaries were provided with God Bharai kits and essential items, which included materials related to maternal health and nutrition. The initiative ensured that the celebration was combined with practical support for women during pregnancy.

Dr Rashmi Singh described the programme as “a meaningful step toward ensuring safe motherhood” and emphasized that maternal health must remain a top priority in public welfare efforts.

Awareness Session: Building a Healthy Future

An awareness session formed a key part of the programme, where pregnant women were educated on several important health aspects. These included the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet during pregnancy, the need for regular health check-ups, and the benefits of institutional delivery.

Participants were also informed about government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) and the Poshan Abhiyaan. Experts highlighted that timely care and awareness can significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

The session aimed to empower women with knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding their health and the well-being of their children.

Strengthening Impact Through Participation

The active involvement of Dr Rashmi Singh played a key role in motivating both field staff and beneficiaries. Her presence not only encouraged the workforce but also reinforced the importance of sustained efforts in maternal and child health initiatives.

The programme successfully conveyed that integrating cultural traditions with awareness campaigns can significantly amplify the impact of government schemes. It demonstrated how community participation and leadership can work together to achieve meaningful social outcomes.

A Model for Community-Based Outreach

The Mission Shakti initiative in Geeta Colony stands out as a model for community-based outreach programmes. By combining traditional practices with modern health awareness, the event created a relatable and effective platform for communication.

It reinforced the idea that social change becomes more impactful when rooted in familiar cultural contexts, making it easier for communities to adopt and accept new practices.

The programme concluded on a positive and enthusiastic note, leaving a strong message for the community: “A healthy mother is the foundation of a healthy society.” The initiative highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between government programmes, leadership, and community participation in building a healthier and more empowered society.
