Kolkata Knight Riders face a setback as pacer Harshit Rana is reportedly ruled out of IPL 2026, while the team hopes for Matheesha Pathirana’s return.
Kolkata Knight Riders have reportedly suffered a major setback ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season as Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana is likely to miss the tournament due to injury. The pacer sustained a knee injury during a warm-up match ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 and was subsequently ruled out of the global tournament as well. His absence could affect KKR’s bowling plans for the upcoming IPL season. Although an official confirmation from the franchise or the Board of Control for Cricket in India is still awaited, multiple reports suggest that the young fast bowler will not be able to participate in the tournament this year. Harshit Rana had recently attended the BCCI’s Naman Awards ceremony on March 15 but was seen on crutches during the event. The pacer was unable to walk to the stage to receive his award for Best Debut in Men’s International Cricket for the 2024–25 season, further confirming concerns about the seriousness of his injury. His absence will come as a blow to the Kolkata-based franchise, which was hoping to rely on him as part of its Indian pace attack.
KKR May Not Name Replacement for Harshit Rana
Despite reports that Harshit Rana will miss IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders are unlikely to announce an immediate replacement for the injured fast bowler. According to reports, the franchise believes that it already has a strong pool of Indian pace bowlers capable of filling the gap created by Rana’s absence. KKR currently have several Indian fast bowlers in their squad including Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Akash Deep and Kartik Tyagi. The presence of these bowlers gives the team flexibility in selecting its playing combination even if Rana does not recover in time for the tournament. However, there have also been reports suggesting that the franchise conducted trials for multiple pacers as a precautionary measure. Some sources claim that Simarjeet Singh, who has previously played in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings and was also associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad last season, could be considered as a potential replacement if the team decides to make a change. Simarjeet has experience in domestic cricket and has shown the ability to bowl with pace, making him one of the possible options available to the franchise. At the moment, however, Kolkata Knight Riders appear confident about their existing bowling resources and may not rush into signing a replacement.
KKR Hopeful of Matheesha Pathirana’s Return
Apart from Harshit Rana’s injury, the fitness of Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana is also a matter of concern for Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL season. Pathirana, known for his unique slingy bowling action similar to Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, had also suffered an injury during the T20 World Cup. The pacer picked up a calf strain during the tournament and was forced to miss the remaining matches. Pathirana was one of the most expensive signings for KKR during the IPL auction last year, with the franchise securing his services for a massive ₹18 crore. Because of this investment, the team is hoping that he will recover in time to play a key role in the bowling department. Despite the injury setback, the franchise remains optimistic about his availability for the upcoming IPL season. Recently, Pathirana’s manager Amila Kalugalage shared a picture of the Sri Lankan pacer wearing a Kolkata Knight Riders jersey, which many fans interpreted as a positive sign regarding his recovery. If Pathirana regains full fitness before the tournament begins, he is expected to be one of the leading pace options for the team.
Blessing Muzarabani Joins KKR After Turning Down PSL
Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders have strengthened their bowling attack by signing Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani. The tall pacer has been brought in as a replacement for Bangladesh left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. Muzarabani was among the standout performers in the recent T20 World Cup and was even named in the tournament’s best team for his impressive performances. His addition is expected to add pace and bounce to KKR’s bowling lineup. Interestingly, Muzarabani reportedly turned down an opportunity to play in the Pakistan Super League in order to participate in the IPL. The 29-year-old had been signed by Islamabad United in the PSL but later withdrew after receiving his IPL contract. Reports suggest that the Pakistan Cricket Board could consider taking action against the Zimbabwe pacer, although it is believed that he had not signed a formal contract with the franchise. This is not the first instance of a player choosing the IPL over the PSL. Earlier, South African cricketer Corbin Bosch also withdrew from the PSL to join the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and later received a one-year ban from the PSL as a result. Despite such controversies, players continue to prioritize the IPL due to its global reputation and financial opportunities.
